TEXTING FOR HEALTH!
Promise, it's no joke that patients can respectfully communicate with their personalized healthcare team securely through HIPAA compliant apps. Mhealth apps come in the 1000s and are made available on mobile devices integrated into EHR systems for documentation, analysis or communication. SMS messaging is capable to communicate direct from the patient to EHR system, and vise-versa. Success has been found with SMS use by improving education (SEXINFO, p270), reminder notifications (Hoyt, 2018). Medical studies that encourage participation via SMS provides extra care and time to be utilized. One benefit that parents can gain from SMS messaging, for example, is by improving packed lunches for school, positively affecting the individual’s behavior changes by enhancing nutrition (2021). What was found in the study relates mhealth communication with improving health outcomes. If applied, the SMS nature creates an intention of healthy regular nutrition as the child's daily routine.
Mobile phone-based interventions can also be used to provide education to a group or the general public. Communication through means of text messaging is a public health approach at maintaining health and preventing future illness. Researchers who performed a study in Peru, found a beneficial correlation between ARMADILLO, a SMS targeted intervention of sexual education in adolescents. The result of the study found a general improvement of knowledge of sexual health and risk, emphasizing focus of digital intervention with adolescents specifically (Public Library of Science, 2021). The health impact of SMS can be beneficial not just within our nation but can globally reduce health disparities.
